The role, the specificity and importance in American culture and history

The sixth edition of American Culture Days (2-4 April 2014), organized by the American Studies Academic Circle of the Jagiellonian University, in collaboration with the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, will focus its attention on a very distinct American region – the South. The student and graduate academic conference, the central event of the Culture Days, will analyze and discuss the key aspects that made the South stand out on the cultural map of the United States, considering factors of historical, economic, and political nature that made the American South a cultural entity, not only a geographical one. What shaped the South, and what is it today? What makes it so specific, its identity so distinctive? How has it changed and how is it changing still?

It is impossible to overstate the historical importance of slavery and the Civil War, the period of Reconstruction and racial segregation, the impact of this history on the entire United States. But the South is so much more than just its history; it is, among other things, the birthplace of many genres of music – blues, country, jazz, southern rock – it continues to influence music today. Southern literature born such authors as Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, and many others. One cannot forget the Southern American English, the largest group of language dialects in the US. Or the phenomenon of “Southernization”, the increasing role of southern politicians but also the “southern values” at the level of national policy. Today, the South is a region with a population exceeding 100 million, where there are two fifths of the 50 largest metropolitan districts of the US, including the most famous Dallas-Fort Worth.

Striving to facilitate scientific reflection on the specificity of the South (in history and now) and its role within the culture and history of the United States, the American Studies Academic Circle at the Jagiellonian University, in collaboration with the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, decided to establish the American South as the main theme of the 6th American Culture Days. We invite you to submit abstracts of conference presentations on the issues outlined above, in the historical, cultural, economic, political context, etc.

All interested in the conference "American South", please send your completed application form available at https://knauj.typeform.com/to/nifZzy. The deadline for submissions is March 10th 2014. We will contact the authors of accepted presentations no later than 20th March 2014. The planned length of the presentations must not exceed 15 minutes. The conference fee for the presenters is 60zł, which must be paid by the accepted speakers no later than March 25th 2014. Participation in the 6th ACD as a listener is free. We want to also inform that we plan to release a peer-reviewed publication after the event. We will notify the speakers who will participate in our event about its details.

Rola, specyfika i znaczenie w amerykańskiej historii i kulturze

Tematyka szóstej edycji Dni Kultury Amerykańskiej (2-4 kwietnia 2014), organizowanej przez Koło Naukowe Amerykanistyki Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego we współpracy z Instytutem Amerykanistyki i Studiów Polonijnych koncentrować się będzie wokół niezwykle wyrazistego regionu - amerykańskiego Południa. Przedmiotem kluczowego punktu programu, a więc studencko-doktoranckiej konferencji naukowej, będą wszystkie aspekty, które sprawiły, że region Południa wyróżnia się na kulturowej mapie Stanów Zjednoczonych. Czynniki historyczne, ekonomiczne, polityczne, dzięki którym mówimy o amerykańskim Południu w sensie kulturowym, a nie tylko geograficznym. Co ukształtowało Południe, i jakie jest dziś? Skąd bierze się jego specyficzna tożsamość? Jak zmieniło i wciąż zmienia się Południe?

Nie sposób przecenić historycznej wagi instytucji niewolnictwa i Wojny Secesyjnej, okresu Rekonstrukcji i segregacji rasowej, wpływu tej historii na całe Stany Zjednoczone. Z drugiej strony, Południe w kulturze to między innymi ojczyzna wielu gatunków muzycznych, bluesa, country, jazzu, southern rocka, o ogromnej sile oddziaływania na muzykę współczesną. W literaturze to Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner i wielu innych. To także Southern American English, największa grupa dialektów językowych w USA. To w polityce zjawisko zwane “Southernization”, czyli coraz większa rola polityków z Południa, ale też wartości typowo “Południowych” na poziomie polityki krajowej. Dziś Południe to region, którego populacja w końcówce XX wieku przekroczyła 100 milionów, gdzie znajdują się dwie piąte z 50 największych okręgów metropolitalnych Stanów Zjednoczonych, takich jak najbardziej znany Dallas-Fort Worth.

Pragnąć stworzyć pole do refleksji naukowej nad specyfiką Południa (kiedyś i dziś), jak i jego rolą dla kultury i historii Stanów Zjednoczonych, Koło Naukowe Amerykanistyki UJ we współpracy z Instytutem Amerykanistyki i Studiów Polonijnych UJ postanowiło tej tematyce poświęcić VI Dni Kultury Amerykańśkiej. Zachęcamy do nadsyłania abstraktów prezentacji konferencyjnych, dotyczących wyżej zarysowanych zagadnień, w kontekście historycznym, kulturowym, ekonomicznym, politycznym etc.

Wszystkich zainteresowanych konferencją „Południe” prosimy o przesyłanie wypełnionego formularza zgłoszeniowego, dostępnego pod adresem https://knauj.typeform.com/to/UjZNrC w nieprzekraczalnym terminie 10 marca 2014. Z autorami przyjętych prezentacji skontaktujemy się najpóźniej do 20 marca 2014. Oczekujemy prezentacji zarówno w języku polskim, jak i angielskim. Ich planowana długość nie może przekraczać 15 minut. Dla przyjętych osób przewidywana jest opłata konferencyjna w wysokości 60zł, którą należy uiścić do dnia 25 marca 2014 włącznie. Udział w VI DKA w charakterze słuchacza jest bezpłatny. Zaznaczamy również, że po VI DKA planowanie jest wydanie recenzowanej i punktowanej publikacji pokonferencyjnej. O szczegółach jej dotyczących powiadomimy prelegentów, którzy będą brać udział w naszym wydarzeniu.
