5th American Culture Days KNA UJ
Student and post-grad academic conference
Kennedy
The Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora
Jagiellonian University
18-19 April 2013

The subject of the 5th American Culture Days (15-19 April 2013), organised by the Academic Circle of the American Studies at Jagiellonian University, together with the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, will be one of the most famous American families. The Kennedy name will be the watchword of the students and post-grad academic conference, which takes place between 18 and 19th of April 2013); the main event of the Culture Days.
Not many US families can claim that they have changed the country’s history. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, played a significant role in the politics of the early 60s. The international relations of the US during his term are still the subject of research for many academics around the world. The events surrounding his death, anniversary of which falls on this year, are still a subject of controversy. Robert Kennedy, US Attorney General during his brother’s presidency, and then a US senator, played no lesser part. His career has also ended abruptly, during the 1968 campaign. Their brother, Edward Kennedy, played a significant part in the country’s politics, including two presidential campaigns.
The three brothers are just a small part of the Kennedy family history, which has shaped the United States politics for six generations. Considering their impact on the US, on the academia and the American culture, we’re devoting the lion share of the 5th American Culture Days to the Kennedy family. Together with the Institute of American Studies and the Polish Diaspora, the Academic Circle of American Studies is inviting you to send in presentation proposals on the subjects connected to the Kennedys.
We’re interested in presentations concerning the political engagement of the Kennedys, their significance and influence. We do not want to limit the subjects to purely political, and so we encourage presentations concerning the influence of Kennedys on the society, the phenomena such as the assassinations of 1963 and 1968, of the Chappaquiddick incident, or the so-called family curse. We’re also looking for papers on the cultural aspects of the family’s legacy, their image in literature, film and music.
We entourage all interested to send in short abstracts (300 words) and a bio of the author to the conference’s e-mail address (dniamerykanskie@gmail.com). The deadline is 2nd April 2013. We’ll contact the authors before 5th April. We invite presentations in both Polish and English. The lenght of the presentation cannot exceed 15 minutes. The presenters will be asked to pay a conference fee of 30 zl before 11th April 2013. Conference attendance for the audience is free of fees.
In case of any questions or doubts regarding the conference or any other events of the 5th American Culture Days, please contact us via the aforementioned e-mail address, or through the official facebook page of the event.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference,
Academic Circle of American Studies at Jagiellonian University
