Students and graduate student Academic Conference
American
War.
Politics, Culture, Society
Jagiellonian University
Krakow, Poland
22–24 April 2015
The seventh
edition of the Days of American Culture (April 22–24, 2015),
organised by the American Studies Students' Research Society of the
Jagiellonian University in
cooperation with the Institute of
American Studies and Polish Diaspora and the National Security Students’ Society will focus on the issue of the
U.S. military and its participation in armed conflicts over the centuries. In
the history of American state, the military aspect has played an important
role, strongly indicating the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, and George W. Bush, among others.
From the very
first clashes with the natives of North America in the era of colonisation,
through the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War, to the involvement in
the Middle East, American military has taken part in conflicts around the globe.
One of the defining moments in the history of the United States was the
participation of U.S. troops in the World War II in Europe and Asia, and the
impact it had on the American economy and national identity. Another important
issue is the cultural dimension – conflicts, e.g., in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and
Afghanistan, preserved in film and literature. It is through the film art that
the image of the Vietnam war and traumatic experiences of fighting soldiers
reached the social consciousness, influencing public mood in the 60s and 70s.
The psychological factor and attitudes of veterans and civilians are also an
interesting perspective one can approach these issues.
Military complex
has also had a considerable impact on the development of the industry and new
technologies – in the war on terror era, the U.S. military budget is almost 40
percent of the arms expenditures worldwide, exceeding $640 billion in 2013. As
a result, the American military technologies are most advanced in the world.
The United States military issues also largely define American society. Many
citizens strongly sympathise with and are proud of their army.
The interdisciplinary
conference American War. Politics,
Culture, Society will be devoted to many of the above issues. Therefore we
invite cultural theorists, historians, anthropologists, sociologists,
psychologists, political scientists, military specialists and other
representatives of the humanities and social sciences, who wish to present
their research on the broadly defined American military to send their
presentation proposals.
If you wish to
