CINEMA IN HISTORY, CULTURE AND SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
Jagiellonian University in Krakow
27-29 April, 2016

We are pleased to announce that the 8th edition of Days of American Culture, organized by American Studies Students' Research Society of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow in cooperation with the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow will be held in April 2016. This year's edition will be dedicated to the aspect that made America famous throughout the world - American cinematographic industry and its impact on the United States.

United States had been one of the pioneers of cinematography. From East Coast, where everything  started, to Hollywood; from The Birth of a Nation, Jazz Singer, Wizard of Oz to Titanic, 12 Years A Slave and Star Wars; from Buster Keaton to Meryl Streep – the examples are plenty, and it is still difficult to point out the diversity and rich history of American cinema. Magic of the silver screen for over a century has been attracting people to the theatres. People, who are sitting in the dark screening room and expecting not only pure entertainment, but also an opportunity for a reflection.

American cinema has been reinvigorating to the nation's industry and had an enourmous impact on forming of American cultural legacy. Due to its wide range and influence it has been active in shaping up the society as well as American political life, which only furthers its position in sociopolitical history of the United States.

The conference Hollywood – Making America. Cinema in History, Culture and Society of the United States has – as did the previous editions of Days of American Culture Conference – inderdisciplinary nature.
